Collegiate Partners: A History of Success

Since 1994, the Horatio Alger Association has collaborated with many diverse colleges and universities across the United States to achieve the common goal of furthering the American dream of access to education by providing scholarship assistance to deserving young people from modest means who have demonstrated integrity and determination in the face of great personal adversity.

The Collegiate Partners Program has grown to include many colleges and universities from across the country from which Horatio Alger Scholars are encouraged to consider. Collegiate Partners are represented by a complete cross-section of higher education institutions in the country; public, private, secular and religious. Their campus enrollments range from 1,000 to 40,000 and are located in small towns and large metropolitan areas alike.

While scholars are not required to attend Collegiate Partner schools, the Association encourages students to apply and consider the additional aid resources available to them. Scholars that apply to Partner schools must meet the school's established admissions requirements to be eligible for any additional aid through the program.

Collegiate Partner colleges and universities agree to match the Horatio Alger scholarship funds, reducing the amount of loan indebtedness a Horatio Alger Scholar would incur otherwise. Partner institutions meet the exhibited financial need of a Horatio Alger Scholar with a combination of campus-based resources including institutional grants and/or work study. Collegiate Partners also agree not to use Horatio Alger awarded funds to reduce institutional scholarships and grants that the student would otherwise be eligible to receive.

To become a Collegiate Partner, the Association requests that the institution sign an agreement form that establishes a working relationship between the Association and the school. Collegiate Partners receive a list of Scholars and their contact information after the recipients are announced at the beginning of each year. Along with their scholarship, recipients are given a list of Collegiate Partner institutions and information about the program. The Association will continue to mediate the relationship between the school and student as needed throughout the college selection process. Either party may discontinue the agreement at any time. There are no membership fees or dues required.
