Horatio Alger Scholarship Programs |
Since 1984, The Horatio Alger Scholarship Programs have provided millions of dollars in college scholarships to young people, making their dreams of higher education achievable. The Association's scholarship programs are the nation's only financial assistance effort that specifically focuses on identifying young people who, like the Members of the Association, have overcome exceptional hardships. Despite facing adversities in their young lives, Horatio Alger Scholars have proven their ability to succeed.
Representative of the cultural and ethnic diversity of our great nation, all races, creeds and communities are reflected in the faces of the Horatio Alger Scholars. In fact, one-third of the scholars represent a racial and/or ethnic minority. Every year at least one Scholar is selected from each state including Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. States with larger populations typically have more than one Scholar.
Applicants for the Horatio Alger Scholarship Programs are evaluated and selected based on the following criteria:
- Critical financial need;
- Integrity, self-reliance and perseverance in overcoming adversity;
- Academic potential and a commitment to pursuing a bachelor's degree;
- Participation in co-curricular activities;
- Commitment to the community as evidenced through volunteer service; and
- Potential and aspiration to make a unique contribution to society.
Scholarship award amounts range from $1,000-20,000 and the funds are dispersed directly to the collegiate institution over the Scholar's college career. In addition to the scholarship, students have access to other services during their undergraduate years and beyond. The Association offers financial aid counseling, internship and career placement opportunities, graduate school grant programs, and also the Collegiate Partners Program.
