High School Seniors Receive $10,000 Scholarships and Opportunity to Meet Some of America's Most Prominent Leaders in Washington, DC

(December 17, 2002, Washington, DC) Over 100 high school seniors from across the United States will each receive a $10,000 college scholarships from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Inc. (A complete list of the 2003 Horatio Alger National Scholars immediately follows this release). The Horatio Alger Association is one of the largest privately funded scholarship programs in the nation, awarding over $4 million in need based college scholarships annually. This year's class of scholarship recipients was selected from more than 50,000 applicants nationwide.

The 104 recipients of this year's Horatio Alger National Scholarships did so by completing an application on the Horatio Alger website describing adversities they have encountered in their lives and how they used hard work, integrity and perseverance to overcome them. While overcoming formidable odds, the scholarship recipients have demonstrated excellence in academics and co-curricular activities as well as performed community service.

Walter Scott Jr., President of Horatio Alger Association, remarks "The Horatio Alger Association congratulates all of our National Scholars on their outstanding accomplishments and we look forward to playing a role in their future successes." Mr. Scott also emphasizes that "The Association's commitment to the success of our Scholars goes beyond a financial award and includes means to help them succeed in college and in life." In addition to a scholarship each of the students will receive financial and educational counseling during the National Scholars Conference, in Washington, DC. The students will also meet many of the members of the Horatio Alger Association, distinguished Americans who have overcome obstacles and triumphed over adversity to achieve success in their lives. The members of the Association take a role of mentoring and encouraging each student to fulfill their potential and attain their professional goals.

The Horatio Alger National Scholars Conference will be held April 2-6, 2003. Students will travel from around the country to attend this annual event in Washington, DC. Students will also be present at the 56th Annual Horatio Alger Award Ceremony, where ten Americans will receive the Horatio Alger Award for overcoming humble beginnings to achieve professional success. The Award Ceremony is hosted by Ed McMahon, a member of the Association since 1984 and Executive Producer of the Horatio Alger Awards. Mr. McMahon is one of the many Horatio Alger Members who will meet these students and become a part of their lives and memories forever. While in Washington, DC the students will also participate in the following events:
