Scholarship Recognizing Struggle with Over $400,000 in Assistance Now Available for Louisiana High School Seniors

(August 29, 2006/Washington, DC) - Incoming high school seniors are encouraged to visit www.horatioalger.org and apply for a Horatio Alger Scholarship. These scholarships recognize adversity and need above all other criteria. Applying for the scholarship requires no cost or future obligation. Those young people who have been adversely affected by last year's hurricanes are especially encouraged to apply.

The Horatio Alger Louisiana Scholarship is an honor that will provide inspiration to young people to continue to aspire for their goals and tangible assistance in the form of a significant financial contribution toward college tuition and fees. Many colleges and universities match the Horatio Alger Scholarship with grants to further help reduce the cost of college education. The scholarship puts recipients in the company of other young people like themselves that refuse to allow circumstances to limit their aspirations.

Applications can be completed online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. The applications require the completion of biographical, academic and financial information. Each applicant is asked to describe the adversities that they have faced or are facing. Past scholarship recipients have detailed their experiences living in poverty, in foster care, being homeless, being physically abused and having parents who abused alcohol or drugs.

The Association will award fifty scholarships of seven thousand dollars and twenty five scholarships of two thousand five hundred dollars to high school seniors from throughout the state of Louisiana. The students awarded a Horatio Alger Louisiana scholarship may utilize it to attend any college or university in the state of Louisiana.

The Horatio Alger Louisiana Scholars Program is funded through the generosity of William J. Doré, Chairman and CEO of Global Industries, Ltd. In 2000 Mr. Doré was inducted into the Horatio Alger Association, an organization comprised of Americans who have overcome adversity and humble beginnings to achieve success. William Doré currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Horatio Alger Association.

More than five million dollars will be awarded by the Association to high school seniors graduating in 2007 through a combination of the National and State Scholarship Programs. The Horatio Alger Association is the nation's leading provider of need based college scholarship having provided forty million dollars in college scholarships since 1984.

High school seniors, parents, educators, family members and anyone who knows a high school senior should encourage them to visit www.horatioalger.org/scholarships and learn more about the available scholarships.
