American Exceptionalism Still on Display at Horatio Alger Dinner
Rush Limbaugh Show
April 12, 2010
RUSH: I have to tell you what I did over the weekend. I was invited to attend the Horatio Alger Association dinner on Friday night at Constitution Hall in Washington. So I flew up there right after the program. (interruption) Well, 'cause I was only going to be there two nights. This was a well advised and well worth it trip. The Horatio Alger Association has been around for decades, and the association inducts new members every year, people who have come from nowhere. They did not have a privileged family or privileged anything when they were born, when they were growing up. And they have become leaders, high achievers.

Other inductees named this year include former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Tommy Ray Franks.
Founded in 1947 in honor of author Horatio Alger Jr., who wrote of overcoming adversity through perseverance, the association selected Seneff for his "story of success in the face of significant struggle," said David L. Sokol, association president. Sokol also noted that Seneff would "help continue our mission of helping other young people achieve similar success" through its established scholarship program.
Seneff, a 1968 graduate of Florida State and Vietnam veteran, launched CNL in 1973 with a $5,000 loan from his father. The company has since grown into an international real-estate investment and development entity, with more than $24 billion in properties.

Dallas banker's fall from grace was merely a detour

Dallas banker Jody Grant was 50 years old before he ever talked in public about his father or his childhood.
His early years of living with an alcoholic father were just too embarrassing to share with even his closest friends. He bared his soul once for a Young Presidents Organization 21 years ago and then tucked his childhood struggles away from public view.
His later-in-life catastrophe – the failure of the Fort Worth bank company he headed – was well-documented. Yet he avoided talking about the personal devastation it caused for him and his family.
Until today.
