Misfortune doesn't hold back senior from South

But Gervais, 18, has persevered, overcoming the loss of one of his two sisters and his father, as well as a host of other setbacks, including blindness in one eye and the fact that his parents separated early in his life. He took it upon himself to take more difficult AP and honors courses his junior year. Earlier this year, Gervais was named as one of the recipients of the Horatio Alger national Scholarship, which comes with a $20,000 scholarship.

Overcoming adversity no stranger to award winner

Peter Ruggiero is no stranger to success. Ruggiero, a senior at Warwick Veteran’s Memorial High School, not only sports a 3.3 GPA, but he’s also a three-letter athlete—playing varsity football (he’s a co-captain), baseball and wrestling. But Ruggiero never expected to be selected to win the 2009 Horatio Alger scholarship award.

Two Johnson High School students get $20,000 scholarships

Moua, his six siblings and parents moved into a one-bedroom apartment with his uncle's family. Mohamed, his mother and two sisters were homeless. Now, both are seniors at St. Paul's Johnson High School, and their plans for college got a huge shot in the arm last week when they learned their struggles to overcome adversity had earned them each a $20,000 scholarship from the Washington, D.C.-based Horatio Alger Association.

Two very special young people received an incredible piece of news this week – they had each been chosen out of thousands of applicants nationwide to receive $20,000 scholarships to help fund their college education. Kyle Coleman, 17, of Upper Lake, and Laura Benavides, 18, of Nice, received word Tuesday that they were among 105 recipients of the scholarships, offered by the Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program.

Graduate overcomes Cerebral Palsy, wins national honors

Joshua M. Neace's determination to overcome Cerebral Palsy has made him his school's valedictorian, and the first Northern Kentucky student ever to be selected a national Horatio Alger Scholar. Neace received the Scholar designation, and the $20,000 college scholarship that goes with it, at a black tie banquet where the 108 recipients were met by trumpeters wearing tuxedos in Washington D.C. in April.

On Sept. 10, 2001, Autumne White moved into a group home with her seven brothers and sisters. History was made the next day, but the White family had more immediate problems. They had been pulled from their home to escape an abusive father, only to be placed in a home for juvenile delinquents where they were mistreated. Their parents separated and later divorced and the children moved back in with their mother.

The Staten Island Tech senior was the only Intel Science Talent Search finalist in the city, he won the New York Times College Scholarship and the Albert Shanker College Scholarship, and he is being followed around by a documentary crew making a film called "Whiz Kids." But for the Charleroi Area High School senior who has overcome adversity throughout her life, it was a challenge that provided a lifetime of opportunity. The dilemma Package faced in was how to be in Washington, D.C., to accept the Horatio Alger Scholarship and in Atlanta to accept a Coca-Cola scholarship during the same week in mid-April. Attendance is necessary to accept each scholarship.

Two Berlin High Students Get National Recognition

Two Berlin High School seniors have won prestigious national scholarships. Kendra A. Parent beat out 35,000 applicants to be named a 2007 Horatio Alger National Scholar, which carries a $20,000 scholarship. Arielle Arsenault was named a national winner in the 2006-07 Principal's Leadership Award Scholarship Program, which carries a $1,000 scholarship.

They were on their way to one of his high school basketball games. He had just finished meeting with an attorney in Springfield, giving a statement relating to a custody dispute between his mother, Danna, and his father, Greg. Ryan was about 14 at the time.
