The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans has announced it has awarded scholarships to four high school students in Minnesota. Each scholar will receive $20,000 to assist in funding their college education. The students were selected for the Horatio Alger Hormel State Scholarship because they persevered in overcoming adversity while also demonstrating excellence in academics, admirable character and community contributions.

3 Miss. students win Alger scholarships

Three Mississippi high school students will receive the Horatio Alger Association’s Mississippi State Scholarship, a $5,000 award.The scholarship winners are Joseph Ashley of Wiggins, Ariel Novak of Gautier and Marlon Floyd of Burnsville. The students were chosen for the scholarships because they overcame adversity while also demonstrating excellence in academics, character and community contributions.

Jessica Kuhr is a small town girl who dreams big and travels far. The 19-year-old Nebraska native has traveled to Peru, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England, always returning home to her family farm outside of Platte Center. This month, Jessica makes a shorter trip from Platte Canter to Sioux city, Iowa, to attend Morningside College on a $5,000 Ark-Sar-Ben Horatio Alger Scholarship.

The winners of the 2009 Horatio Alger Scholarships have one thing in common for certain – John O’Connor, the school’s district’s college selection facilitator. O’Connor encouraged Mandy Spriggs, Gabrielle Ridgeway and Swade Geiger to apply for the scholarship, which is one f the largest need-based financial aid programs in the country.

Carl Smith has overcome obstacles.  The 2008 Tioga High School graduate isn't wealthy and doesn't even have a car.  He takes the city of Alexandria bus wherever he goes. Carl works and worked a job to 1 or 2 a.m. most of his senior year in high school.  The teen once walked from his Alexandria home to a public transportation bus stop, caught a bus to the old Pineville Wal-Mart and then walked to Tioga High School during standardized test week. He had missed the bus but knew he had to get to school for testing.
